The Boy I Love

Set in 1980s Coventry, England, the book is a hilarious yet deeply honest Young Adult novel follows Jo Kwan, a first-generation British-Chinese teenager navigating the chaos of growing up above her parents' Chinese takeaway. 

Jo deals with a massive language barrier at home (her parents speak little English, and the kids speak little Chinese), casual racism at school, an eccentric family, and unlucky pets, all while dreaming of breaking free to become an artist. It is heavily autobiographical, based on the author's own childhood.
