We’re proud to be Literacy Champions with the National Literacy Trust. As co-founders and Literacy Champions, we’re weaving our Big Heart Book Club mission into everything we do, both locally and through our growing book subscription community.
Here's what we'll be doing as Literacy Champions in the coming year:
1. Hosting Community Book Swaps
We’re setting up free book exchange boxes in local cafes, food banks and waiting rooms, so every family can access beautiful and inclusive books.
2. Donating Book Boxes to Underserved Families
For every subscription we sell in our launch months, we commit to donating books to children who may not otherwise have them at home.
3. Running Inclusive Storytime Events
We’re bringing storytime to schools, libraries and community events, with a focus on books that reflect diverse characters and real-world issues.
4. Championing Representation in Reading
We're raising awareness about the importance of children seeing themselves in stories, and celebrating books that reflect different families, cultures, abilities and experiences.
5. Sharing Literacy Tips with Parents & Carers
Through our blog and resources hub, we offer practical ideas to help families build everyday reading routines — even in busy homes.
What Is a Literacy Champion?
The National Literacy Trust’s Literacy Champions programme mobilises local volunteers to take action in their communities to improve literacy levels and promote a culture of reading for pleasure. Whether that means giving away books, hosting storytime events, or starting a book swap corner, each Champion brings creativity, energy and heart to the cause.
Why Literacy Matters More Than Ever
Reading isn’t just about books, it’s about access, equality and empowerment. Research from the National Literacy Trust shows that:
-
1 in 4 children leave primary school in the UK without the reading skills they need.
-
Children who enjoy reading are more likely to succeed academically, socially and emotionally.
-
Reading for pleasure is one of the biggest predictors of future success — even more than socio-economic background.
We know that a single book can change a child’s life. It can show them they're not alone. It can open up new worlds. It can even help them imagine a better one.
That’s why being Literacy Champions feels like a natural extension of our work.
Join the Literacy Movement
We believe that literacy is a human right. And that change starts with ordinary people doing extraordinary things, like sharing a story, gifting a book or simply encouraging a love of reading.
If you’re passionate about literacy, we encourage you to explore the Literacy Champions programme. You don’t need to be a teacher or a writer, just someone who believes in the power of stories.
