How We’re Supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals

How We’re Supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals

How We’re Supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals Through Storytelling

At Big Heart Book Club, we believe in the power of books to shape the future of our communities and our planet.

Our mission to raise kind, curious and conscious readers perfectly aligns with several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global framework for creating a more just, equitable and sustainable world by 2030.

We see every book box as a chance to plant seeds of empathy, activism and of hope.

🌍 The Goals We’re Passionate About

Here are just a few of the UN SDGs that inspire our work:

Every child deserves access to inclusive, equitable and inspiring learning materials.

We seek out stories that celebrate all identities and challenge gender stereotypes.

Our books amplify underrepresented voices and experiences.

Children are powerful protectors of the planet. We promote stories that foster environmental stewardship.

Collaboration is essential. We support authors, educators, and organisations working for positive change.

5 Actions We’re Taking in 2025 to Help Build a More Sustainable, Inclusive World

1. Curating SDG-Aligned Book Themes All Year

Each quarter, we feature themes that directly reflect SDG values on Our Shelves, from Climate Action & Activism to Global Thinking. We carefully select titles that not only entertain but also empower young readers to understand big ideas in an age-appropriate way.

2. Giving Back with Every Box

For every subscription, we donate books to children in our community.  This year, we’ve pledged to distribute 200+ free books to children and families that need them most.

3. Eco-Friendly Packaging

We’re committed to reducing waste. All of our packaging is manufactured in the UK, reducing pollution created through longhaul logistics and we work with print partners who use environmentally certified materials.

4. Amplifying Diverse Voices

Our curation team prioritises books by authors and illustrators from marginalised communities. We also spotlight stories that explore disability, global cultures, LGBTQ+ identities, and more, helping children build empathy across differences.

5. Collaborating with Changemakers

We’re actively building partnerships with educators, literacy nonprofits, and youth-led climate initiatives. In 2025, we’ll be co-hosting workshops and storytime events that blend reading with real-world activism.

Raising Readers Who Care

Our vision is simple; to create a world where every child feels seen in a story and inspired to change the world for the better.

By aligning our work with the Sustainable Development Goals, we’re taking small but meaningful steps towards that vision. Whether it's through a beautifully illustrated picture book on ocean cleanups or a heartfelt tale about belonging, we believe stories are powerful tools for social impact.
